I know I'm ringing in a bit late on these, but this year's Emmy nominations pissed me off. How many times must we honor Jane Kaczmarek for her work on MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE. I mean, don't get me wrong - I love Jane. I love her husband, Bradley Whitford. But hello? WHEN IS LAUREN GRAHAM GOING TO GET HER OVERDUE PROPS? What about Kristen Bell? And don't get me started on how neither GILMORE nor VM got any writing nods. Then again, this years nomination list is so all over the map. Kevin James for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series? Martin Sheen for outstanding lead actor in a drama series? I mean, yes, I know WEST WING retired. But if anyone should've gotten nominated, it should've been the aforementioned Bradley Whitford.
Anyway, here are my picks - PICKS, not predictions - for the August ceremony:
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series: Steve Carell as Michael Scott in THE OFFICE - I'll be totally shocked if Carell doesn't walk away with the prize.
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series: Denis Leary as Tommy Gavin in RESCUE ME - Sure, the award will probably go to someone like Peter Krauss for SIX FEET UNDER, or Martin Sheen for WEST WING, but even though I adore both actors, neither turned in the kind of performance that Denis Leary does on RESCUE ME.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series: Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish in THE COMEBACK - I'm not thrilled with the selection here, and I'll gag when Debra Messing takes home the statue just because WILL & GRACE took its final bow this year. The only other person I wouldn't mind seeing walk away with the statue is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, because I actually really like THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, and I'm glad she's finally found a sitcom to get her over the SEINFELD hump.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series: Kyra Sedgwick as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in THE CLOSER - Again, not the best selection, and I'm guessing Allison Janney will take it. I'd be okay if Frances Conroy got it for SIX FEET UNDER, but if Mariska Hargitay wins for SVU - ugh. UGH.
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series: Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold in ENTOURAGE - this isn't even up for debate. If Piven doesn't win, it's a conspiracy. A conspiracy, I tell you!
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series: Alan Alda as Arnold Vinick in WEST WING - another poor selection of nominees, but Alda did kick ass.
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series: Jaime Pressly as Joy in MY NAME IS EARL or Elizabeth Perkins as Celia Hodes in WEEDS - totally torn here, because both are awesome actresses and are fabulous in these parts. Pressly's role is more showy, so I'm almost pulling for Perkins, but then I think, "How many chances does the female lead in JOE DIRT have to win a respectable award like an Emmy?"
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series: Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang or Chandra Wilson as Dr. Bailey, both in GREY'S ANATOMY - I love Sandra Oh. And Chandra Wilson is hilarious. Blythe Danner is also nominated, for HUFF, and in the one episode I watched of it, she was amazing, too. But the show itself - HUFF, I mean - sucks. So, I don't know. Not really invested in this category, I guess.
Outstanding Comedy Series: ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT or THE OFFICE - either one would make me happy.
Outstanding Drama Series: ??? - I like all of the shows on the list, except for 24, which I've never seen. But was HOUSE really the best? Was GREY'S ANATOMY? I guess I'll throw my support behind WEST WING for its swan song season.
Outstanding Reality Program: KATHY GRIFFIN: MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST - if she loses to ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, I'm going to send her flowers. I'm for serious.
Outstanding Reality-Competition Program: PROJECT RUNWAY - even though THE AMAZING RACE will win. Again.
Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series: ??? - finally, a category with too many good options! ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, ENTOURAGE, MY NAME IS EARL, THE OFFICE ... any of these guys deserve the win.
Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series: SIX FEET UNDER - I'm guessing. The final episode was pretty powerful.
